In the Christian tradition, the miracle of the Bread and Fish (also known as the feeding of the multitude) is a popular story. Traditional readings of this story interpret Jesus multiplying the bread and fish so that everyone could eat. However, this is not the only reading of this text. This miracle may not be a miracle of divinity, but a miracle of humanity and community. This story can serve as a model of mutual aid and care, which is a necessary lesson for us to learn as we prepare for the next four years.
Andrew Laro (he/his) is a seminary student who is pursuing a dual Master of Divinity at Union Theological Seminary and a Master of Social Work from Columbia University, with intention of becoming an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ (UCC). He hopes to become a pastor of a radically progressive church that practices extravagant welcome for those who have been rejected or harmed by the church in the past. In his free time, Andrew enjoys playing Dungeons and Dragons (yes, he’s a major nerd and proud of it!) hiking, drinking coffee, reading, drinking even more coffee, obsessing over his cat Ari, and sampling craft beer.
