In Their Own Words: Looking Back on Australia

Led by Janis Stahlhut

By some accounts, indigenous Aboriginals have roamed the vast Australian Outback for as many as 70,000 years. Janis will share reflections from her recent journey to Uluru/Ayers Rock and the profound historical awareness she learned there. Through stories relayed by descendents of Anangu Uluru elders, and recorded and interpreted by permission by Jen Cowley in “I Am Uluru,” Janis will share some of their experiences of the last 100 years – a period shaped by the infiltration of white Europeans. Now, in a last attempt to preserve their history, the Uluru and other Aboriginal families are collaborating with the Australian government to reintroduce and reinforce the ancient culture and wisdom of Australia’s indigenous peoples. Together they hope to shape a future that blends and preserves Aboriginal identity with the modern society built by “whitefellas.”
