UU 101

This past Sunday a group of twelve people gathered in the Community Room to learn about Unitarian Universalist history and theology. (There will be a Part II – UU102- on March 13th, and others are welcome to join us! See announcement below.) It is easy to forget that we are part of a larger living tradition that is both deeper and wider than our own UUC in Stamford.  Learning about what binds us together as Unitarian Universalists roots us in a movement much larger than ourselves.

One of the most meaningful ways that we can engage with the larger tradition through Unitarian Universalism is through participation in the annual General Assembly. I attended my first General Assembly as a delegate in Providence, Rhode Island in June 2014 and was blown away by the power of Unitarian Universalists from all over the country- and the world- gathering together in one place. The energy of gathering for worship and assembly, the new connections made with people, and the learning gained through workshops and conversations made this conference a life-changing experience for me. I was then able to bring this experience back to my home congregation, inspiring others to attend future General Assemblies.

Since that time I have attended several other GA’s, mostly online. Technology has provided the opportunity for delegates to participate in voting on important matters (such as the election of our president and officers, changes to our principles and sources, and social justice resolutions), and to share in worship and workshops without leaving home. Many churches have also joined remotely for Sunday Worship. For the past two years, General Assembly has taken place fully remotely due to Covid.

This year the General Assembly will be multi-platform, taking place in Portland, Oregon and on Zoom from June 22-26. Registration for in person is open now, and registration for online participation will be open on March 1st (click here for registration). I am excited to be able to attend in person this year and welcome others to join me. If you are interested in serving as a delegate to this congregation at this year’s General Assembly- either in person or online- let me know!

General Assembly is a great opportunity to learn, share, and connect with the wider circle of Unitarian Universalism. I’d be glad to meet and talk with anyone who has questions or would like to learn more.

In faith,
Rev. Terri
